A few months ago my incredible Mother in law Paula found out she has relatively advanced breast cancer. Our family is very, VERY strong, close knit, tight, you know what I mean..we stick things out, seek honesty and truth, run to the hospital when a baby decides to come early OR late, bring dinners, do laundry, make coffee runs for each other. We love each other and so this news of course shocked us all and has been difficult to adjust to.
Paula in so many ways is the glue of this family, a true matriarch. she know every ones schedules, birthdays, job interviews, all the children’s sleeping habits, favorite foods, allergies, this woman is amazing. So you can imagine that this news of cancer has made us want to do something for her, anything we can to help during one of her greatest times of need.
after finding out about the cancer and the chemo and radiation that is to follow her surgery an offhanded comment was made about making a wig for Paula using mine and the other girls hair with a special thought of the fourth and final wedding of her oldest son Bryan to Rachel at the end of May.
this offhanded comment turned into all of us, chopping off our long locks including a snippet from the bride and handing them over to Kurt at Anton’s in Bellevue to make a special, custom covering for our beloved Mother’s beautiful head.
Last week we went down with Paula and Kurt took all the measurements and pictures that he needed, he asked us if we had anything to admit about our hair and of course I had to fess up that mine could be quite curly and unruly but would offer some nice body and thickness..Paula very sweetly smiled and didn’t even bat an eyelash. We picked up the wig yesterday and it was truly amazing what Kurt created with our hair. He made it all the same, beautiful shade of deep brown (to match Jenny's whose hair was the exact color of Paula's!) and made sure that the texture blended and worked well together. The results were so incredible and it was a gift to be there with my Mother and Sisters and know that we are all in this together as a true family..it has made me feel so much closer to you all, I love you guys so much and am honored to be among the ladies in this group!
Paula the Bible calls a woman’s hair her glory and so it is an extreme honor and privilege to be able to give our hair to you to wear for these month ahead of you as a reminder that you are our Godly, adored, beautiful example of Jesus love and glory in our lives. You have made us all feel nothing less than a part of the crown you will wear in heaven. Thank you for giving us the gift of accepting our hair (even if mine gets a little unruly amongst the rest ☺) and loving us all so well – we love you so much and are so very thankful for the strong, important role you are in our lives.
God is bigger than this cancer and we are in there fighting with you. you are one tough woman who is more brave and strong than ever. And thank you for raising four such incredible, handsome, godly men to take care of us for that we can never repay you!!
you look so beautiful despite all that you are going through! still lovin your grandbabies..all five!
Smooches and hugs to my Gough girls!!xo,
Rebekah
